SOMESPRING SPECIAL took our score for the season to 40 with her second victory on Thursday.
A ready winner of a conditional jockeys’ chase at Plumpton on Sunday she escaped a penalty for a much more valuable mares’ Chase five days later at Cheltenham and duly scored another success in the colours of the Yeo Racing Partnership.
She was well ridden both times by Ben Godfrey who is great value for his 3lbs claim and was delighted to achieve his first triumph at the home of steeplechasing.
Ben let the race unfold in front of him, kept an eye on the keen front runner Sacre Coeur, and brought his mount through to lead at the final fence.
Somespring Special is one of ours who can’t handle deep winter ground. So we sent her home for a short break before she returned to us a month later and she is clearly much more effective now that conditions have dried up significantly. So it makes sense to keep her on the go for a while.
Earlier in the day Juniper was placed in another mares’ Chase at Cheltenham for the second year running. Twelve months ago she finished second in the race off a handicap mark of 113. This time, racing off 125, she kept on stoutly to be third.
