SOMESPRING SPECIAL bounced back to form with a stylish success under top weight in a two and a half mile conditional jockeys’ handicap Chase at Plumpton on Sunday in the colours of the Yeo Racing Partnership.
After two disappointing runs over fences when she seemed to get bogged down in the mud she must have found the scorching pace set by the free-running Magistrato in quicker conditions a bit of a shock.
Ben Godfrey suggested afterwards that it felt as if he was riding in the two mile Champion Chase at Cheltenham rather than a Class 4 race at Plumpton.
Somespring Special certainly appreciated the drier spring ground. She jumped tidily and began to close on the leader turning for home before moving ahead on the way to victory by eight and a half lengths to provide our 39th win of the season.
She has an entry in a competitive two mile mares’ handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Thursday and I’m tempted to let her take her chance as she escapes a penalty for Sunday’s triumph and with Ben claiming a valuable 3lbs she would have only 9st 12lbs to carry.
First, though, I’ll see how she comes out of Sunday’s race before confirming that plan.
