It was good to see GORE POINT make a successful handicap debut at Newton Abbot on Wednesday in the colours of his breeders Mark and Liz Pendarves on his first start since we fired his palate.
A well-bred gelding with a future he has been a bit too keen for his own good since winning his bumper at Stratford last October.
On his first try over hurdles at Taunton, he didn’t want to settle, pulled too hard and then took a tired fall late on.
Since then it has been a case of going back to basics by trying to teach him how to race and save something for the finish.
Gore jumped economically and travelled nicely for Sam Twiston-Davies at Newton Abbot before staying on strongly to catch the leader Hill Station in the last stride.
I liked the way he found more in the closing stages and imagine he might have one more run over hurdles before maybe switching to fences.
