THE CHIEF . . . . . .

FOUNTAIN’S CHIEF doubled his score for the month of May with a runaway success under a penalty in a novice hurdle over two and a half miles at Worcester on Friday evening.

In the absence of the obvious danger Sporty Jim he started at the prohibitive odds of 1-33.

I doubt if any of ours have ever been sent off at shorter odds but he won as a hot favourite should by eighteen lengths.

Fountains Chief’s jumping was slick throughout and he rattled home well after stretching clear in the straight without being asked any sort of question by Rex Dingle who was complimentary about the ground at Worcester.

Half of me wants to be to try to make hay by finding a similar race for him under a penalty in three or four weeks if the ground is suitable. That, of course, depends on the weather.

Then again I don’t think he would be disgraced if I kept him for the Persian War Hurdle at Chepstow’s first jumps meeting of the new season in October.

Either way the enthusiastic Fountains Partnership have a nice prospect on their hands.
